Various Skills I've acquired
Hard Skills
-Tarping (I learned this skill on my very first trip - It was raining heavily and it was prudent that we got the tarps up quickly and efficiently to stay dry and warm - I learned how to make a center line and how to set up a tarp in a way that inhibits a build up of rain on top of it)
-Cooking with portable campaign stoves (I learned how to safely use the stoves in a way that avoids the risk of burns to the legs and hands - I learned the importance of setting up a stove on a flat surface to avoid spills)
-Using maps to navigate a trail (I learned this skill while hiking on Bowen Island. The trail was dark which made it hard to find trail markers so we relied on the landmarks such as lakes and creeks that were shown on a map to navigate the trail)

Soft Skills
-Patience (This skill was particularly difficult for myself. I've always been the type of person that needs to get things done as efficiently and as quickly as possible in order to feel at ease. In big hiking groups at times it's most beneficial to be patient and wait for the group rather than hiking quickly to get to the destination)
-Communication (I learned the importance of being vocal. I've always been the type of student that solves problems in my head or on paper but being in Outdoor Leadership it exposed me to the importance of solving problems through communication in order to make a fully developed solution)
-Decision Making (I learned the importance of sticking to a decision and following through with it. In risky terrain it can be crucial to make a decision on which trail to take in order to be safe and sticking to that decision will make your trip more efficient and your time management won't suffer)
